CODZILLA
Maybe you have heard people talking about this Thrill Boat ride in Boston Harbor or maybe you saw the report on Chronicle not too long ago, wherever you have heard about Codzilla, it must of piqued some interest. Well lets not leave it to the imagination, lets go check out the new craze and take a wild ride on Codzilla to end the summer. According to the Codzilla site, it is recommended that you buy advance tickets for this ride, so pick up the phone now and reserve your seat on the boat for this date and time. Here is a little about the boat: Codzilla is 70 of marine aluminum and bad attitude. Codzilla seats (or was that "eats") 135 people, so reservations are recommended. With two turbo-charged diesel engines driving state of the art waterjets, Codzilla roams the ocean with 2,800 horsepower. (We're not talking sea horses, my friend.) Plus with its unique hull design, Codzilla is capable of thrilling 360-degree turns and spinning on a dime. On occasion, its hard to hear the crew and custom music over the blood-curdling screams of your fellow voyagers, so weve equipped Codzilla with a state of the art sound system and 30 marine-grade speakers to insure proper amplification. We will meet at 12:45 at the ticket booth so that we can sit together on the boat. If you are running late or have to cancel at the last minute, please call the meetup cell phone at [masked] Hope to see you on the dock awaiting your thrill ride.

Battis Farm Walk and Swim
Join me, Ruby and Cuddles on a walk around Battis Farm that borders Lake Gardner at the mouth of the Powow River in Amesbury, Mass. We'll meet in the parking lot at 9AM and head past the community gardens where dogs must be leashed. After we pass the gardens, we can release the hounds. We'll pass Camp Kent, following the edge of the woods until we come to the first path to my favorite swimming hole. We'll let the dogs swim for about 10 minutes and then continue along the trail that borders the lake, stopping occasionally at other openings to the water's edge. However, those that would rather return to their cars early should feel free to head back the way we came in. I will lead everyone else around the rest of the property and have you back at the cars by 10:00. Call [masked] to cancel last minute please so that we are not waiting for you in the parking lot. Disc Golf in Pelham NH
Let's take a ride up to Pelham and try the Disc Golf course at Muldoon Park. We can meet at the The Hillside Country Store, which is across the street from Muldoon Park. The country store provides the discs free of charge. We can proceed up to muldoon park and play either 9 or 18 holes, then grab some lunch at the deli upon returning the discs. For those who do not know what Disc golf is: Disc golf is a lot like traditional "ball" golf, except players use specially made plastic flying discs instead of balls and clubs, and throw them for 'par' at an above-ground target instead of a hole in the ground. There are different types of discs used for different purposes, much like ball golfers use different clubs. The object of the game is to throw a golf disc into the target, typically a "Pole Hole" basket (a steel basket over which chains hang), in the fewest number of throws. The player begins by 'driving' from a designated tee area and continues toward the target, throwing each consecutive shot from the spot where the previous throw has landed. Finally, a successful 'putt' sends the disc into the target. The most satisfying sound a disc golfer can hear is the 'ching!' of a disc crashing the chains before dropping into the basket. So come on out on this fall day and join us in a game of disc golf.

Wolf Hollow!
Lets go check out the wolves at Wolf Hollow. Wolf Hollow was founded in 1988 by the late Paul C. Soffron, with the mission of preservation of the wolf in the wild through education and exposure. Visitors are welcome at Wolf Hollow, where they meet the resident wolves and learn the importance of the wolf in the wild as top predator. By observing how a wolf pack functions, visitors learn how wolves are a benefit to the environment around them and ultimately to us as humans because of the many parallels to our own families. Wolves are still very much a threatened species and visitors will learn what can be done to help alleviate the threat. Wolf Hollow is fully licensed by the State of Massachusetts and the federal government as a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization. We support our work solely through our admission, gift shop sales, adopt-a-wolf program and donations. Their pack of British Colombian timber wolves started with five pups donated by other facilities in the United States. The original five were from three different litters so that a family could be started at the facility. Visitors have the opportunity to view the wolf hollow pack while a one hour educational lecture is presented. The recommended age for this program is five years and up. While learning about how the wolf lives in a family group, its role in nature, its history with man, and the fight to preserve their species in the wild, visitors observe the wolves interacting with their pack-mates at close range. The official site of Wolf Hollow: Wolf Hollow is a non-profit organization established in 1990 to teach people about the importance of the wolf in the wild. Wolf Hollow offers a unique opportunity to view gray wolves in as natural a setting as possible. Come see how they interact with their pack members and live in a social unit very similar to human families. Weather permitting if it is raining then they are closed. Please remember to check back to this site to see if there are any updates. Time: Ticket sales start at 1:00, formal presentation will start at 1:30. Cost: Admission $7.50 Adults, $5.00 Seniors, $5.00 Children (Ages 5-17) Directions: Wolf Hollow is located approximately 3 miles outside downtown Ipswich on route 133 heading east. From the Boston area take route 128 north to exit 20A (route 1A) heading north. Turn right onto route 133 east about 8 miles from 128. We are about a mile and a half down 133 on the left. Children are welcome at this event, but note that it is an hour long presentation and the recommended age is five years and up. If you are running late or get lost call the Meetup phone at [masked], please note this phone does not accept text messages. We look forward to seeing you! Donna & Janet

Bird Banding Workshop
The Joppa Flats Education Center, in cooperation with the US Fish and Wildlife Service, operates a bird banding station on the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge. Data from the station is utilized by the US Fish and Wildlife Service and Mass Audubon to monitor species diversity, the movement of birds on the refuge, bird populations, and other factors. - - Joppa Flats is offering a limited number of openings in its Bird Banding Workshop. This program is designed for participants who want to learn the basics of bird banding. During the two-hour classroom portion of this workshop on Thursday evening, we will discuss the principles and objectives of bird banding, provide strategies for identifying birds in the hand, and review the many aids for aging and sexing these incredible animals. During the field trip on Saturday morning, we will visit the bird banding station; participate in the identification, aging, and sexing process; band birds; and help with data collection. - - This course is required of all bird banding station volunteers. Registration is required. Call 978-462-9998 for details. See http://www.massaudubon.org/catalog/listing.phpprogramcode=276-JF10SU1 for more information.

Angel Food Ministries needs our help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok, ok its been a longtime coming....but we promised you a community service event and we have found one that needs our help. Angel Food Ministries in Haverhill. Below is a little information from their website to assist in understanding what they do: Angel Food Ministries is a non-profit, non-denominational organization dedicated to providing food relief and financial support to communities throughout the United States. The program began in 1994 with 34 families in Monroe, Georgia (between Atlanta and Athens), and has grown to serve hundreds of thousands of families every month across 44 states. Angel Food Ministries crosses denominational lines and has spread the good news of the gospel of Christ through salvation tracts that are placed in each food order. Blessings by the box Angel Food is available in a quantity that can fit into a medium-sized box at $30 per unit. Each month's menu is different than the previous month and consists of both fresh and frozen items with an average retail value of approximately $60. Comparison shopping has been done across the country in various communities using a wide range of retail grocery stores and has resulted in the same food items costing from between $42 and $78. Generally, one unit of food assists in feeding a family of four for about one week or a single senior citizen for almost a month. The food is all the same high quality one could purchase at a grocery store. There are no second-hand items, no damaged or out-dated goods, no dented cans without labels, no day-old breads and no produce that is almost too ripe. Also offered are specialty boxes such as steaks, chicken and pork. Many participants in this bonus program appreciate the expanded choices. Additionally, there is no limit to the number of units or bonus foods an individual can receive, and there are no applications to complete or qualifications to which participants must adhere. Angel Food Ministries also participates in the U.S. Food Stamp program, using the Off-Line Food Stamp Voucher system. How it works: Orders and distribution are handled by church host sites. Orders are collected by the host sites during the first part of each month. These orders are then turned in to the Angel Food main office in Monroe, Georgia, on a predetermined date. Several days later, in the same month, the host site either picks up the food from Angel Food's 160,000 square feet warehouse to fill the orders on Distribution Day or, because this ministry is growing nationwide, food is delivered to the host site by a pre-arranged delivery mode. In most cases, as long as there is a truck headed in the direction of a community who wants this program and sees its ministry influence, there are no extra transportation costs What Can we do?: The Haverhill site is a drop off for the 2 Haverhill locations, they need assistance in unloading their trucks and packing up the orders every last Saturday of the month. The summer months being the slowest and fall and winter being the most active. We will meet at the Haverhill site at 7:30am and assist where the ministries need our help. Don't worry about any physical limitations...there is a job for you. We are going to provide our services for September and then if we want to continue this effort we will make this a monthly event....its all up to the membership.

4th Annual Brew Fest
4th Annual Brew Fest! The Amesbury Sports Park will be hosting the 4th Annual Brew Fest on Saturday, September 25th (they will be having the event from 12-8pm, but we will be attending at 5:00pm) at its facility at 12 South Hunt Road in Amesbury, MA. The Brew Fest, sponsored by WXGR and Bud Light, will feature up to 100 beers (just $10 for 10 samples), barbecue, OGO (Outdoor Gravity Orb) and summer tubing rides, and music by 6 live bands on an outdoor stage. The Brew Fest attracted nearly 1,400 people last year, and they are expecting north of 2,000 people to attend the all day event this year. They strive to make the event bigger and better every year, and they've made some changes in the interest of keeping things fresh and fun. There will be a beer garden sponsored by Bud Light, and they've invited their favorite craft brewers to come and talk about their beer to make it more of a personal experience. The Brew Fest will feature such crowd favorites as Sweaty Betty, Lobster Ale, Pig's Ear Brown Ale and Jack's Pumpkin. A note from Amesbury Sports Park: After being so well received last year, we decided to make Michael Bernier & The Uprising the headlining band this year. Other bands include the Scott Barnett Band, the Dejas, 7 Mile Drive, McAlister Drive, and Beyond Reason. Aside from beer, BBQ and bands, the Brew Fest will feature OGO rides and summer tubing. The OGO (Outdoor Gravity Orb) is an 11 foot inflatable transparent sphere with another inflated sphere suspended inside it. Riders enter the orb and strap themselves into a harness, or enter the H2OGO with up to 3 people and 5 gallons of water and are pushed over the edge of an 800 foot grassy slope! Amesbury Sports Park will be offering up incredible giveaways all day, including Celtics and Bruins tickets, various gift certificates, and more! Guests must be 21 or older unless accompanied by parent or legal guardian. Tickets are available online at http://www.amesburysportspark.net/brew%20festl.html and at the door the day of the event. Buying a ticket for the event: Go to the website above and order your ticket(s) on line, or on the day of the event at the door. Updating the site: Please remember to come back and update the site when you have purchased your ticket, so we know exactly who will be coming to the event! Where to meet: We will update this as the event gets closer. Parking: They have a pretty big parking lot. Time: Please remember that we will only wait 15 minutes to head out to this event (get some beer) if you are running late, get stuck in traffic or get lost, please call the meetup phone at 978-304-2811. Weather: Rain may cancel this event! Check back before you head out to see if there are any updates. So the question is who is going to do the OGO and or with water or with out? You can check out what the OGO is all about on their website http://www.amesburysportspark.net/ We look forward to seeing you at this event! Donna & Janet

March at Maudslay
We'll meet near the restrooms at the Maudslay State Park parking lot. This walk is aproximately 4 miles long and medium to fast paced. We'll stop at least once to let the dogs swim in the Merrimack River. The current is strong, but there is a bit of an inlet that I swim in myself and may do so if it's hot enough. We'll walk through the center of the park and head east along the river and then up past Arrowhead farm and along the eastern border of the park, back through the field and to the parking lot. It takes me about 50 minutes to walk this without stopping, but I'll allow for 2 hours since we'll have to make stops for the dogs and to allow time for swimming. I'll plan on having everyone at their cars by 1PM. PLEASE NOTE: Dogs must be leashed in the park. Let them off leash at your own risk. We will be walking through a less-used area of the park where I do let my dogs off leash but I have gotten warnings by park rangers (only twice in my 85 visits) But my dog does come when called and she sits next to me when joggers or horses pass by. This is not a walk for you if you are not interested in either keeping your dog leashed or if your dog is not under voice control when he/she is off leash.

Seal Paddle
The mouth of the Merrimack River is a reliable place to see harbor seals during the spring and fall. These beautiful animals can often be seen feeding in the river or on the rocks along the north bank of the river. - - During our adventure, we will launch our kayaks at the Newburyport waterfront, paddle across to the Salisbury side, and then drift and paddle to Badgers Rocks near the mouth of the river. En route, we will explore the mudflats and tidal creeks, looking for shorebirds and egrets. At Badgers Rocks, we will stop to study the seals. After a rest stop at Salisbury Beach State Reservation, we will use the incoming tide to help us paddle back to the waterfront. - - Instruction in kayaking techniques and safety procedures is provided. The fee covers single kayak rental. Subtract $5 per person for double kayak rental and $15 per person for tag alongs. Experience Level: Beginner II (no experience required; some stamina required). Newburyport Massachusetts is on of the smallest cities in the state, but it is certainly one of the most beautiful oceanside community!

The city has a strong tourist industry including a favorite destination for art lovers. Here you will find a most charming and large downtown area full of art galleries, specialty shops, historic B&B's, and terrific restaurants.

Newburyport is home to many large and gracious Federalist homes that were built by fortunes acquired by whaling and clipper ship owners living during the 19th century. Don't forget to visit Plum Island, an oceanfront wildlife refuge which also contains lovely beachfront and adorable summer homes and cottages.

Newburyport is very proud of its history and justifiably so, Newburyport staged the first tea party in opposition to England's tax on tea and it was well before the more famous one in Boston Mass. Newburyport is also proud to be the birth place of the United States Coast Guard since the first ship commissioned for the Coast guard was built here and named the frigate Massachusetts.

In the early 1960's, Newburyport used state and federal funds to launch a massive redevelopment scheme to reclaim its historic neighborhoods made of granite, cobblestones and to update their utilities such as water and sewer. At the same time in order to prepare for a profitable present and future, Newburyport built an industrial park which now houses many diversified small industries.

Many residents commute daily to Boston via Route 95 and on the commuter rail. Residents are proud of the fact that many families have lived in the city for generations, but they are just as proud of the fact that the city welcomes newcomers and the new ideas they bring. So come to Newburyport and experience the history, beauty and hospitality!
